Lancashire Cricket, Emirates Old Trafford is delighted to announce it has been shortlisted within the categories Best Sports Event of the Year and Best Sports Club / Sports Event Hospitality in the prestigious Sports Business Awards 2020, following a record summer in 2019.
The awards shortlist follows a record year of success in 2019 for Lancashire Cricket, who hosted six ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures, an Ashes Test and Lancashire’s domestic campaign.
The Best Sports of Event of the Year category recognises the best sporting events from across the globe. The nomination follows the venue hosting the India vs Pakistan ICC Cricket World Cup fixture, the biggest match in world cricket.
On 16 June 2019, the fixture was the first of six Cricket World Cup games at the stadium and didn’t fall short to its billing with a global television audience of over a billion. Twelve months prior to the game taking place, tickets went on sale via a ballot on the ICC website. Over 600,000 supporters applied for tickets for this match at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, which has a capacity of 23,500. The game was an official sell out after 48 hours.
The Club has also been shortlisted for the Best Sports Club / Sports Event Hospitality category, which recognises the hospitality team’s most successful year on record for 2019, delivering over 14,000 hospitality covers – 9,738 of which were attributed to the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The hospitality offering at the stadium was transformed in 2019, as the Club invested over £250,000 in delivering an unforgettable and unrivalled hospitality experience for guests. This included the creation of the premium, yet informal Century Lounge package in The Point, which could accommodate 750 guests.
The shortlists follow the recent financial results, where the Club reported the best Ebitda (£7.6million), for a First-Class county in its annual financial report for the year ending 31 December 2019.
Commenting on the nominations, Sales Director, Angela Hodson said: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for the Best Sports Event of the Year and Best Sports Club / Sports Event Hospitality in this year’s Sports Business Awards.
“2019 was a record-breaking year for us – it’s rare that you get both a World Cup and an Ashes Test in the same year and our financial results for the year reflect that. These awards really signify the work we put in to transform our hospitality offering, as well as hosting the biggest game in world cricket.
“However, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have without the fantastic team we have at Emirates Old Trafford.”
The shortlists follow the recent This Is Manchester Award wins for ‘Leading Live Event of the Year’ and ‘Leading Sporting Venue of the Year’ in 2019.
The accolades celebrate the success of the India vs Pakistan fixture during the ICC Cricket World Cup, which attracted a TV audience of over one billion, as well as the biggest summer of cricket in the Club’s history.
