Lancashire Cricket, Emirates Old Trafford is delighted to announce it has been shortlisted for the new Coronavirus Innovation Award: Protection in the Prestigious Sports Business Awards 2020.
The Sports Business Awards have added new Coronavirus-related categories, highlighting the response of a variety of sports businesses during these challenging times.
The Protection award recognises exemplary activity in responding to the coronavirus threat to protect workforce, athletes or your place of work, with Emirates Old Trafford being shortlisted for its work to implement and deliver international cricket this summer in a behind-closed-doors, bio-secure environment.
Emirates Old Trafford welcomed the first international travellers during the pandemic as the West Indies squad arrived into Manchester airport before quarantining in the on-site Hilton Garden Inn hotel and training at the ground. The venue went on to host 21 days of international cricket with Pakistan and Australia also travelling over to play England throughout the summer.
The international fixtures, which were held at both Emirates Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl in bio-secure environments helped secure £200 million in broadcast revenues alone.
It follows the initial shortlisting within the categories Best Sports Event of the Year and Best Sports Club / Sports Event Hospitality following a record summer in 2019 when Emirates Old Trafford hosted six ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures as well as the Fourth Ashes Test Match.
The Best Sports of Event of the Year category recognises the best sporting events from across the globe with Emirates Old Trafford’s nomination being the hosting of India vs Pakistan in the World Cup, the biggest match in world cricket and one with a global audience of over 1 billion. Over 600,000 supporters applied for tickets for this match at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, which has a capacity of 23,500. The game was an official sell out after 48 hours.
The shortlist for the Best Sports Club / Sports Event Hospitality category, recognises the hospitality team’s most successful year on record for 2019 at Emirates Old Trafford, delivering over 14,000 hospitality covers – 9,738 of which were attributed to the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The awards ceremony, which will now be held virtually, will take place on Wednesday 16th December.
