#EOTWellbeing: Why being tech savvy is a must for your event

Technology is a significant part of our everyday lives, having integrated into every aspect.

Over the past few years, technology has advanced at such a rapid rate, and there are many benefits of new technologies that can be used to enhance conferences and events.

In recent years, there has been a change in the way we invite, outreach and promote our events. Technology enables us to target the relevant audience and generate excitement through the use of social media channels.

In November’s edition of #EOTWellbeing, we’re taking a look at the benefits and the importance of incorporating technology at conferences and events.

Top technology trends shaping events

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is a term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer generated environment, which allows a user to explore and interact just as they would in everyday situations.

VR allows a person to become part of a new network, or immerse themselves within a specific environment, often requiring them to perform a series of actions. The technology is rising in popularity due to its lifelike simulation and is a great way to add an interactive element to an event.

How can it be used at your events?

Often, it is used to demo products at an event, as it allows your delegates to fully immerse themselves into the products, driving the buyer to make a purchase.

You can also encourage delegates to be involved with the event through virtual attendance, providing you with the ability to reach a global audience.

Multi-use apps

Event apps have proven incredibly popular within the industry over the past few years. Bulky paper event guides are a thing of the past, with event apps proving a much easier method to interact and inform delegates about the day.

How can it be used at your events?

Instead of a paper guide which includes a breakdown of your event schedule, apps are a great way to provide key, bitesize chunks of information about your event and guest speakers. If you are running multiple activities simultaneously, an app allows you to highlight key objectives of each activity, as well as important details such as location and time per session.

It also offers a platform which allows your delegates to socialise and share key learnings about each session. An app is a great way to keep your delegates informed after your event has ended, by posting useful and engaging content, as well as keeping them updated about any future events.

Try apps such as Teem, Webmobi and Sli.do to streamline your event planning.

Beacon Technology

Beacons are one of the latest developments in location technology, and connect and transmit information to smart devices using Bluetooth technology. This makes location-based searching more accurate and much easier.

How can it be used at your events?

Beacon technology emits a signal to a user’s phone and can be a useful tool to provide information and personalised messages to your delegates.

It’s also an incredibly useful tool, as it enables you to identify traffic flow. Essentially, beacons can be used to create heat maps of your event, and help measure traffic volumes. This can mean you’re more reactive to issues on the day, such as monitoring registration queues, enabling you to alleviate long wait times. However, it can also provide you with learnings from your event, such as which element was the most popular, meaning you can tailor your event for the next year.

Try using Crowd Compass, Event2Mobile or EventBase to set up beacon technology.

The Drone Experience

A drone is a small, unmanned aircraft which is navigated and controlled from the ground. Some drones have cameras attached to capture inspiring aerial photography and video.

How can it be used at your events?

Drones are great for capturing outdoor, fast-paced events, but are also a way to provide a unique perspective at an indoor event. They can be used to share images on social media in real-time, or of the venue beforehand to excite your audience.

It’s worth checking with the venue whether using a drone is possible, as there may be a number of health and safety standards that must be met in order to use this technology.

#EOTWellbeing round-up

Emirates Old Trafford is partnered with ‘mclcreate’, who provide in-house event audio visual services, with a specific focus on strengthening conferences and events. This includes full product resource across the venue, on-site dedicated technical support, creative design capability and delegate event management support, helping to ensure that all of your technology ideas can become a reality.

Putting aside the event technology trends, the number one thing for anyone organising an event is to let your tools work for you, rather than the other way around. The purpose of incorporating advanced technology is to make your event run as smoothly as possible. Use sources of technology that you have available to engage your audience in an innovative way.
